Topography
PEI’s beaches rated among the natural wonders of Canada and New York’s Times wrote a positive note about the beach as well for its phenomenal “singing sand” and cool water. Bedrock was made up by sedimentary basins which were made by fresh water flowing in streams millions of years ago from ancient mountains.
Physical region
PEI falls under the category of the Appalachian region which is an extension of the Appalachian mountains. This region consists of rolling hills, valleys, small mountains, highlands and the remaining of older mountains called fjords. There is a presence of sedimentary rocks which consists of layers over the vegetation and with time, this area is a large deposit for coal. Igneous and metamorphic rock are present as a result of ancient volcanic activity and these actions later form iron, lead, and zinc.
Climate Region
Prince Edward Island has a continental climate. During the summer, temperatures range from 20 - 30 degrees celsius when it is usually hot but not humid. During the fall, temperatures range from 8 - 22 degrees celsius and the mornings are cool but the afternoons are still warm. During the winter, the temperatures range from -3 to -11 degrees celsius and it is cold and snowstorms occur often. .During the spring, temperatures range from 8 - 22 degrees celsius and the snow melts as the days get warmer.. The average yearly rainfall is 890 mm and 240 cm of snowfall.
Capital City climograph
Charlottetown climatography
During the winter, it is fairly cold and there is a high amount of precipitation which is likely snow. The people need to wear sweaters and snowshoes in order to be comfortable in the temperature. For drivers, the snow could cause many problems so they would have to be prepared. During the summer, it gets fairly hot which is great weather for swimming and hanging out on the beach. During the spring, there is lots of precipitation in the form of rain and it is not too cold or too hot. The residents need to be cautious of rain when going out and make sure to wear a rain jacket or bring umbrellas. The temperature drops during the fall and precipitation starts to rise again.
Precipitation - there is rainfall and snowfall may cause a few problems for the residents
Ocean currents - cold ocean currents arrive from Labrador and occasionally, warm ocean currents arrive from the gulf stream which is near the equator.
Winds - Lots of wind in Prince Edward Island which causes it to get colder at times.
Distance from ocean - It is very close to the ocean which means the ocean gives off heat since oceans radiate heat they capture from the sun.
Altitude - The temperature drops by a degree every 150 ft and Charlottetown has an altitude of 160 ft which means it does not get too cold.
Latitude - Prince Edward Island isn’t very close to the equator so it isn’t as warm as countries near the equator.
Biome Region
PEI is under the mixed forest biome and its forest belongs to the Acadian Forest region of Canada. This region is very similar to the Great Lakes St. Lawrence region of Canada. The forest allows a variety of species to inhabit an area causing biodiversity.
Current Issues related to the physical regions
soil erosion - The natural process of the loss of topsoil on a landform which can be caused either by the natural physical forces of water or wind. .
water pollution from agricultural runoff - Contamination of water bodies which can greatly harm biodiversity.
